When you create a backup to an external hardrive, you will be amazed how much easier and quicker it is than most any other backup system. People use a lot of different kind of backup devices and media, however a portable external hard drive is undoubtedly the most bang for the buck. You will absolutely wish to create a backup of all your valuable music files, photos, movies, bookmarks from your favorite web browser, outlook contacts and this list could literally go on forever.

It is really nice to have the ability to disconnect your external hardrive from the computer you are backing up and move it to an offsite location. This allows you to protect your valuable data and the amazing portability of these devices means you can plug them into almost any computer and have access to your information. Some places you could store your external hard drive might be a relative's house, a friend's office or a fireproof safe at your home or office. If you leave the external hardrive right next to your computer and your home or office is destroyed, you didn't do yourself much good by backing up your data did you? And for many people this is what happens. They realize too late just how critical that data is to them after it's been destroyed.

External hard drives have the most inexpensive storage volume available and you can use them safely for quite a long time before needing to replace them. In fact, most of the time you'll simply upgrade because you want a newer, larger, faster external hardrive as technology improves but it won't be from device failure. I mean why not have the least expensive, largest volume data storage device at your disposal.

To make the task of creating backups easier, I would advise that you use some sort of backup automation software. You set this up one time, pick which files you want to include in the backup and the software remembers that every time you run a backup. This way is more efficient if you stay organized with how you organize data on your computer. You won't have to go and find files and folders every time you need to run a backup. Actually, every windows based computer has a backup utility built in to it already. It may not be the best in the world but it's certainly adequate and will work for most people. Besides that, it's free! Set reminders for yourself to routinely run your backup jobs and when your finished take the external hardrive away somewhere safe.

If you're like most people these days, you have a couple computers at least. Just buy a drive for each computer...trust me, it'll make things easier. I have different portable external hard drives for all three of my systems with labels on each so I don't have to think about which is which. Hope that helps give you some ideas anyway.

You really can't go wrong with an external hard drive. The one I use is one of the portable external hard drives from Toshiba. But there are a lot of people who need more capacity than a portable device can offer. If you're one of those folks, you should really look at the Western Digital 2 TB External Desktop Hard Drive, it is highly recommended all over the web. Most of the smaller portable external hardrives will only a require a usb cable for operation but the larger capacity desktop models will need usb and a wall plug(AC adapter)included by the manufacturer.
